Synopsis:
About Water tells the three-part story of the element of water and its significance to human existence in three different parts of the world. A seemingly mundane 'given' - so often taken for granted - thus becomes a gripping and forthright tale of daily struggle and survival. From the floods and inundations in the Bangladeshi Brahmaputra delta via the once flourishing fishing port and harbor town of Aralsk on the Aral Sea (now landlocked in the barren Kazach steppe), to the daily each-man-for-himself battle over a few jerrycans of clean water in Kibera, Nairobi's biggest slum. About Water is a documentary Lehrstück about a major theme: It's an insistent attempt to throw some questions, doubts and ideas at our views on water, which most of us take for granted and hardly ever challenge.

When water runs out, The world ends. "He who wants water must be prepared to kill for it" an old Arab saying goes. At the beginning of the 21st century water, the ancient source of life, already is in short supply all over the world. About Water tells the story of the element water and its significance to human existence in three different parts of the world. A gripping tale of daily struggle and survival. In spite of water. Without water. With water. From the floods in the Bangladeshi Brahmaputra delta via the fishing port and harbour town of Aralsk on the Aral Sea to the daily battle for clean water in Nairobi's biggest slum. About Water is a documentary Lehrstück about a major theme: It's an insistent attempt to throw some questions, doubts and ideas at our views on water, which most of us take for granted and hardly ever challenge.

Water is the basis of all life. Too little causes suffering. Too much spells catastrophe. About Water explores the existential meaning of water in three different stories - the floods of Bangladesh; Aralsk on the Aral Sea; Kibera, Nairobi's biggest slum. Clean drinking water has become a commodity that decides over life and death. In this documentary Udo Maurer asks some important questions and tackles views on water, which most of us take for granted and hardly ever challenge.
