Synopsis:
From the French-Algerian filmmaker Merzak Allouache ("Bab El-Oued City"), a tragic study in clashing cultures. A young Frenchwoman of Algerian descent dons a djellaba and flies to Algiers in search of her missing fiancé; as her journey takes her deeper into the desert interior, she finds herself increasingly alienated from the people around her, who seem less like her ancestors than citizens of a distant planet. Working in broad, often melodramatic strokes, Mr. Allouache paints a deeply pessimistic portrait of his native country

Set in Bab-el-Oued, a working class district of Algiers, soon after the October 1988 riots. Boualem, a young worker in a local bakery commits a "foolish" act one day. This jeopardises the area and a group of young extremists headed by Said set out to punish the culprit. Violence erupts and develops when Said's sister Yamina is caught meeting Boualem, with whom she is secretly in love.

Bab El-Oued, a popular district of Algiers, in 1989, a few months after the riots. Boualem works at night in a bakery and steals the loudspeaker that was installed on his roof and was broadcasting the Imam's word... therefore preventing him from sleeping. This blunder is taken as a pretext by the Islamists to put the district under their control...
