In 1948, in Martinique, in a climate of strike on a sugar plantation, a manager, white Creole, was assassinated with 36 cutlass and found dead in a cane field of the plantation he administers. After a manhunt lasting several weeks, 16 black cane cutters were arrested and held in preventive detention for three years. In 1951, their trial, sent back to Bordeaux, a former slave port, with the assurance of an exemplary and final verdict, would become the first trial of French colonialism in the West Indies, judged before 'its fathers'.
