The holy buildings of Judaism share the singular, tragic history of the Jewish people. Few of them have traversed the ages. Like the Jews themselves, in order to survive, they had to avoid drawing attention to themselves. In Djerba (Tunisia), they mimic mosques. In Venice, the unassuming facades of the five synagogues in the Jewish ghetto give no inkling of their opulent interiors. On the Iberian peninsula, where the Spanish Inquisition had almost all the synagogues demolished, very few now remain. In continental Europe, where virtually all Jewish places of worship were obliterated by the Second World War, the great synagogue in Budapest is a rare survival. In contrast, in the New World where Jews found refuge, the Beth Shalom synagogue reflects their new self-confidence and their pride at finally being able to show themselves.
