Synopsis:
No German review yet:
A Whole Night: Following over two dozen different people in the almost wordless atmosphere of a dark night in a Brussels town, Akerman examines acceptance and rejection in the realm of romance. The Eighties: This is a making of a musical, with Chantal Ackerman behind and in front of the camera. It is mostly a collection of clips, talks, directions, and lectures, with the camera capturing the whole adventure. Golden Eighties: Three young women at a hair salon all like the son of the clothing store proprietors across the mall. Although Robby is selfish and shallow, he's appealing to Lili, the salon's manager, who's trendy and also the salon-owner's moll; to Mado, who's innocent and sweet; and to Pascale, who's intelligent but passive and downcast. Robby's dad tells him to grow up and see beyond the mercurial Lili, so he proposes suddenly to Mado. She's delighted, but the day before the wedding, Lili returns to give Robby another look. In the background, a Yank who was a soldier in France in World War II returns to Paris and tries to recapture the love of his wartime sweetheart, Robby's mom. Portrait of a Lazy Woman: A director trying to overcome her own laziness, to shot a film about laziness. American Stories: Food, Family and Philosophy: The stories of Jewish immigrants in New York City are told with characteristic humor. From the East: A look at life in Eastern Europe after the collapse of the Soviet Union. South: A documentary examining the effect of a man dragged to death on the residents in Jasper, Texas. The Captive: Ariane lives with Simon in his large Paris flat. Simon is obsessed with her: he wants to know everything about her, secretly follows her when she goes out, asks her questions all the time, even in the most intimate moments. Ariane seems to take it all in her stride, but Simon realizes that she is hiding something from him. From the Other Side: A documentary charting the fate of Mexicans who decide to cross the border into America. Down There: Akerman spends a month in Tel Aviv, in an apartment by the sea, contemplating her family, her Jewish identity and her childhood. Almayer's Folly: In Malaysia in the 1950s, a European merchant is obsessed with finding a treasure to secure his daughter's future. His dreams fall victim to the pressure of his own greed, which becomes a torment. Added to this is the oppressive English domination that dominates the country - and brings ruin to the remote village in which he lives. No Home Movie: Filmmaker and artist Chantal Akerman presents a portrait of her mother, Natalia, who fled Poland in 1938 and came to live in Brussels, where she suffered from chronic anxiety for the rest of her life.
