Synopsis:
Considered by Federico Fellini to be his most expressive and courageous work, this epic portrait of the world's greatest lover stars Donald Sutherland (Klute, Don't Look Now) in one of his most acclaimed roles, and showcases the colourful, bawdy, grandiloquent flights of imagination typical of Fellini's great cinematic spectacles. Rather than a dashing seducer, Fellini introduces a jaded, cynical, aging Casanova hungrily scouring the opulent boudoirs of eighteenth century Venice in an attempt to satisfy his insatiable sexual appetite and as a man whose sexual conquests come to represent severe self-loathing. Boasting lush widescreen cinematography, sumptuous studio sets and lavish Oscar winning costumes, this vision of the life of a philandering dilettante remains one of the great Fellini film experiences.

Fellini's Casanova is played by Donald Sutherland. The film takes great pains to debunk the myth of the Great Lover by presenting him as an ordinary human being swept up in extraordinary circumstances. This Casanova breezes through his various political and amorous adventures with an air of bored detachment, allowing the audience to 'fill in the blanks' regarding motivations and emotions. Though the film's plotline hopscotches all over Europe, Fellini lensed the picture entirely within the lavish confines of Rome's Cinecitta Studios. Danilo Donati won an Oscar for costume design, while Nino Rota (of Godfather fame) should have won for his musical score. A sumptuous visual treat!

One mans relentless search for sexual conquest! From legendary Italian director Federico Fellini comes this bawdy, grandiloquent tale of the worlds greatest lover. Donald Sutherland stars as an aging seducer hungrily scouring the opulent boudoirs of eighteenth century Venice in an attempt to satisfy his insatiable sexual appetite. Casanova remains Federico Fellini's most controversial film it was criticized in the US as too pornographic and esoteric, praised in Europe for its artistic sophistication, while Fellini considered it his most expressive and courageous work. With lush widescreen cinematography, sumptuous studio sets, and lavish costumes (it won the Oscar for Best Costume Design), this vision of the life of a philandering dilettante remains one of Fellini's great cinematic spectacles.
