Synopsis:

Directed by Finland's Jarmo Lampela, this film tells six stories which all take place in a small town in central Finland during a sonic boom. These six storylines intersect at the shared experience of the sonic boom and each vignette combines to show the frailties, disappointments and triumphs of humanity. There's Anni (Sanna Hietala), a single mother who tries to drown herself and her baby in the local river. There's also Esa, a chronically broke musician who attends his father's 60th in order to get some cash; Leena, a waitress floating high on love who wants to play Cupid and match up all her co-workers; Ilpo, who comes home early from work only to face the ruin of his marriage; and an elderly couple who are battling the hospital in order that the terminally ill husband can die at home in peace and with dignity. This film juxtaposes both the happy and tragic elements of human life. It also stars Antti Ikkala and Jyri Ojansivu and was Finland's entry for Best Foreign Film at the 2001 Academy Awards.

Episodic study of feelings where six stories intertwine over one Saturday in a small town. Two boys save a young woman, Anni, and her baby from suicide by drowning. Esa, a down-on-his-luck musician in need of a loan, arrives to his father's 60th birthday party. Waitress Leena tries to stir up a romance between her co-workers at a pizza parlor. Middle-aged Ilpo comes home early from the paper mill and finds a strange man in their bedroom. Old Milja waits for her daughter Merja at the hospital where she is visiting her terminally ill husband Henri. Teenage Santeri tries to cope with his homosexuality.

Lampela has put together a group of individuals who all have something significant happening to them on that day: an old man dies and his wife becomes a widow, a young girl attempts suicide but is stopped by a schoolboy, the entire staff of a pizzeria fall in love, and the parents of a musician learn that their son is not one to change his ways.
