Synopsis:
Acclaimed French director François Truffaut's third and, for many viewers, best film is an adaptation of a semi-autobiographical novel by Henri-Pierre Roché. Set between 1912 and 1933, it stars Oskar Werner as the German Jules and Henri Serre as the Frenchman Jim, kindred spirits who, while on holiday in Greece, fall in love with the smile on the face of a sculpture. Back in Paris, the smile comes to life in the person of Catherine (Jeanne Moreau); the three individuals become constant companions, determined to live their lives to the fullest despite the world war around them. When Jules declares his love for Catherine, Jim agrees to let Jules pursue her, despite his own similar feelings; Jules and Catherine marry and have a child (Sabine Haudepin), but Catherine still loves Jim as well. An influential film that has grown in stature over the decades, Jules et Jim was often viewed by the counterculture of the 1960s as a cinematic proponent of the free-love movement, but in actuality the picture is a statement against such a way of life. Despite the bond shared by Jules, Jim, and Catherine, their ménage à trois is doomed to fail; and Catherine's inability to choose between the two men leads to tragic consequences for all three.

Hailed by critics as one of the greatest films of all times, Truffaut's internationally award-winning film 'Jules and Jim' is set pre and post. The First World War, and tells the tale of two young students, Jules (Oskar Werner), an Austrian, and Jim (Henri Serre), a Frenchman, in love with the beautiful, capricious, Catherine (outstandingly played by Jeanne Moreau). Captivating both of them for twenty years, the enigmatic Catherine switches her allegiance quixotically from one to the other - and occasionally to other men too. Yet neither Jules nor Jim can free himself from her powerful spell...until Catherine performs the definitive action that changes everything forever. An atmospheric and energetic meditation on the nature of human love and monogamous morality, this is a breathtaking film with exemplary performances from the three central performers, told in a classic New Wave documentary-style cinema language.

In the years leading up to World War I, Jules and Jim are inseparable friends. Living in Paris gives them ample opportunities to expand their horizons as they discuss politics, the arts and life in general. Jim is something of a ladies man but Jules isn't so lucky. They soon meet Catherine, a free spirit and the three of them enjoy life together. She soon agrees to marry Jules but with the arrival of the war Jules, a German, return to his home country to serve in the army. Jim serves in the French army and both survive the war. It is a happy day when the two friends are reunited but Jules admits that his marriage has been less than successful and that Catherine has taken many lovers over the years. He loves her very much however and will go to any lengths to keep her with him. Jim and Catherine soon become lovers, with Jules' tacit approval, but Catherine's own needs and desires lead to tragedy.
