Synopsis:
Terry O'Quinn plays The Stepfather in this intelligent, unsettling chiller. We'd tell you O'Quinn's character name, but he has so many. You see, O'Quinn has been a stepfather many times over, romancing and marrying widowed women in several different states. After each wedding, everything is blissful - at least, until O'Quinn's new wife and kids fail to measure up to his notions of perfection. Then he kills them en masse, and moves on to his next victims. Shelley Hack and Jill Schoelen co-star as O'Quinn's latest wife and stepdaughter, who prove to be yet another disappointment to him. An adroit witches' blend of Ozzie and Harriet and Psycho, The Stepfather was scripted by suspense veteran Donald E. Westlake. A lesser sequel, Stepfather II, followed in 1989.

Jerry Blake (Terry O'Quinn) is a man psychotically fascinated by the perfect life - a dream house in the suburbs, a big back yard, an adoring wife and loving children. In a peaceful town just outside of Seattle, he marries the attentive Susan Maine (Shelly Hack of Charlie's Angels). He also becomes the stepfather of Susan's 16-year-old daughter Stephanie (Jill Schoelen). Stephanie, however, is uneasy with Jerry's cheerful manner and doesn't hide her distrust. Although Jerry pretends to be the ideal dad, the teenager glimpses his repressed violence and even concludes that he might be the same man who, one year earlier, murdered his family, but never got caught. Her instincts are right. Jerry is a killer, but no one can prove it. No one except Jim Ogilvie (Stephen Shellen), the brother of Jerry's murdered wife and the fugitives relentless tracker. Stephanie's psychiatrist, Dr. Bondurant (Charles Lanyer) shares her doubts about Jerry's sanity. As Dr. Bondurant, Stephanie and Ogilvie begin to close in on Jerry, he begins to display the telling signs of a man out of control. His perfect life is fast disappearing, just as it did with his last family!

He also became the stepfather of Susan's 16-year-old daughter Stephanie (Jill Schoelen). Stephanie, however is uneasy with Jerry's cheerful manner, and doesn't hide her distrust. While Jerry pretends to be the ideal dad, Stephanie glimpses his darker side...Could he be the same man who murdered his own family one year earlier, but never got caught? Or is she just an overimaginative teenager who resents her new stepfather? A genuinely spine tingling thriller, The Stepfather remains an American horror classic. 'The Stepfather may be the best movie about the break-up of family since Shoot the Moon- a terrific, disquietingly entertaining little film- a piece of genuine Gothic Americana.'
