Synopsis:
Sakari Kijavainen directs this engaging comedy about a burnt-out fire fighter looking for redemption and a new direction. Jesse (Taisto Reimaluoto) is a middle-aged fireman who lives alone in a small apartment in the city. One day he saves a bunch of kindergarten kids from a schoolhouse blaze. He is instantly branded a hero and made the toast of the town, which is disconcerting for Jesse as he is the low-key, self-effacing type. Because of this, he makes a complete fool of himself at the awards ceremony, resulting in a prolonged vacation from his duties. With his newfound free time he decides to look up his estranged father who lives in the suburbs. He also runs into his ex-girlfriend, who runs a phone sex operation under the moniker Lusty Terki, and her nubile teenage daughter - who may or may not be his child. This film was screened at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival.

A small-scale, quirky comedy about a burnt-out fireman, "A Suburban Tale" is amiable without being particularly memorable. An engagingly raffish performance from Taisto Reimaluoto as the decidedly peculiar hero is pic's main asset, but international exposure looks to be limited.

A fireman, Jesse, rescues ten children from a serious fire and falls in love with Marjukka, a nurse who turns out to be the romance of his youth. But his path to happiness is not too easy...
