Synopsis:

Drama based on real-life events. Marie Stubbs, a diminutive Glaswegian headmistress who is coming up to retirement age, takes on one last challenge: to improve the fortunes of St George's School in north west London which was facing closure after the notorious murder of its previous headmaster, Philip Lawrence, in 1995 as he was breaking up a fight between his pupils and those from a rival school.

Julie Walters stars as Marie Stubbs in Ahead of the Class, based on a true story of how a headmistress saved the notorious St. George's School in West London from closure following the murder of headmaster Philip Lawrence at its gates five years earlier. It is the story of one woman's determination to make a difference, and change a broken system. Indeed, when Marie Stubbs is brought out of retirement to face her greatest challenge at St. George's School, it is judged to be only weeks from closure. Marie's philosophy combines simple rules on leadership and routine, with the unorthodox, but most importantly, she believes that pupils want to attend a school they can be proud of. She faces challenges and resistance from pupils and teachers with tireless energy, ingenuity and optimism. This is a story of transformation and triumph
