Synopsis:

Larsen, an aspiring poet in 20's Oslo, leaves his girlfriend to spend a year as a trapper in East Greenland. There he is teamed with a seemingly rough old sailor/trapper, Randbek, and a scientist, Holm. Trapped in a tiny hut together as the arctic winter sets in, a complex and intense love/hate relationship develops between Randbek and Larsen, who are more similar than either would like to admit. A powerful psychological and physical drama set against stunningly bleak arctic scenery.

Larsen, a cocksure young author with a great zest for life, joins a fur-trapping expedition. Armed with self-confidence and a love letter from his girl friend, he arrives in East Greenland late in the summer of 1928.
Together with him on the boat is Holm, an experienced hunter. Before the ship continues its journey they are met by Randbæk who has wintered there and is to lead the expedition. The three are going to spend the winter together. Randbæk realises that Larsen is the greenhorn of the party, and only Holm's intervention prevents his being relegated to the role of housekeeper. Randbæk never gives Larsen a minute's peace. The continual violent conflicts between Randbæk and Larsen eventually become too much for Holm. After one particularly hard fight, on Christmas Eve, Larsen and Randbæk wake up to discover that Holm has disappeared. Winter has scarcely begun, and with Holm's flight from the two increasingly aggressive hunters, the chances of survival in the icy wastes get slimmer and slimmer.

Zero Kelvin is based on a novel by the Danish author Peter Tutein, who himself spent several winters in Greenland in the early twenties. The script was written by the Swede Lars Bill Lundholm in cooperation with Hans Petter Moland. The island of Spitzbergen was chosen as location for Greenland. For six weeks in the autumn of 1994 the entire crew with dogs, sleds, props and equipment, settled down to work in this remote and forbidding environment. The remainder of the film was shot in a refrigerated studio at Norsk Film in Oslo.
