Synopsis:
John and his fiancée Margaret are caught in Chechnya by terrorists. They are taken hostage. While incarcerated they meet Ivan, a war prisoner. John and Ivan are eventually liberated, but the terrorists refuse to let Margaret go and demand two million pounds ransom, or she will be raped and killed. The British Council and Russian Government refused to help John. British Channel 4 is willing to subsidize John to save Margaret but he must tape the whole process. With Ivan's help, they intruded the terrorists camp ...

'War' is set around the ongoing civil war between the Russian Federation and Chechnya, written and directed by Aleksei Balabanov, best known for the "Brat" series. Ivan, a Russian prisoner, is being held by Aslan, a Chechen rebel leader. Hostage negotiations begin, resulting in the decision to allow Ivan and a British prisoner, John, to go free, so that they can return with the ransom for the release of the other captives. However, unable to raise the money, the two men return to Chechnya on a suicidal covert mission...

Explosive action sequences and realistic imagery show the disturbing events when the ransom for two British hostages fails to materialize. Whilst events portrayed in this film are fictional, these are commonly occurring events in the Chechen area of Russia, a brutal vision of a war the world would rather forget.
