Synopsis:
Television film set in Occupied Poland during the Second World War, about a Jewish rabbi and his young daughter and their survival in the Warsaw ghetto. His son, who has managed to escape from a Nazi Labour Camp, finds them out and they hide him. The rabbi is a man of peace and learning and becomes more and more bewildered by the hatred and violence that erupts around him. A close friend of the family, a Pole, regularly risks sneaking into the ghetto to keep the old man company and bring in food, but warped by his experiences the rabbi's son turns on him for being a Pole and gentile. However, the man saves the rabbi's life when the latter breaks the curfew searching for his son, by drawing away the attention and fire of some German soldiers they encounter. The daughter unfortunately attracts the attention of a sadistic SS Commander during a raid, and he orders her to his quarters where he rapes her. A young soldier who is fond of her and sickened by the brutality he sees around him offers to help her escape with him to Switzerland. Her father agrees, but her brother is outraged at the thought of her going off with a German. He pursues them in the sewers as they make their escape but his father prevents him from killing them by struggling with his son, who gets shot in the struggle.
