Synopsis:
Un Chien Andalou (1929) 16min: Luis Bunuel and Salvador Dali's unfathomable short film is a masterpiece of filmmaking guile and audacity, a shocking celluloid dreamscape that destroyed film convention with bizarre images that still resonate today. Includes an audio commentary with Michael Koller, film writer and curator, Melbourne Cinemateque. DALI (1986) 60 min: Documentary showcasing the life and works of surrealist artist Salvador Dali.
Las Hurdes (1933) 30min: Bunuel's only documentary famously depicts an isolated, impoverished Spanish community, and reprised the director's fascination with insects, human cruelty and the corruption of the Catholic Church. A Proposito De Bunuel (2000) 98min: A detailed chronicle of Bunuel's life and art, including interviews held across Spain, France, Mexico and the US.

An Andalusian Dog (1929)
In a dream-like sequence, a woman's eye is slit open - juxtaposed with a similarly shaped cloud obscuring the moon moving in the same direction as the knife through the eye - to grab the audience's attention. The French phrase 'ants in the palms,' (which means that someone is 'itching' to kill) is shown literally. A man pulls a piano along with the tablets of the Ten Commandments and a dead donkey towards the woman he's itching to kill. A shot of differently striped objects is repeatedly used to connect scenes.
Land Without Bread (1933)
The region of Las Hurdes, not far from Salamanca, is largely cut off from the rest of the world. To reach Las Hurdes, it is necessary to travel through the town of La Alberca, which itself has some unusual sights and customs. The Hurdanos themselves live in several dozen villages in the nearby mountains, near a valley that contains the ruins of a convent. The lifestyle of the Hurdanos is so primitive that, until fairly recently, even bread was unknown to them.

An Andalusian Dog (1929)
Un Chien Andalou consists of seventeen minutes of bizarre and surreal images that may or may not mean anything. A straight razor seems to be placed by a woman's eye, a small cloud formation obscures the moon, a cow's eye is slit open, a woman pokes at a severed hand in the street with his cane, a man drags two grand pianos containing dead and rotting donkeys and live priests, and a man's hand has a hole in the palm from which ants emerge.
Land Without Bread (1933)
Today the region of Las Hurdes is fairly developed and is considered as one of the leading areas for rural tourism in Spain. Green mountains, lots of rivers and natural swimming pools, great food and friendly people, make Las Hurdes an excellent natural spot to visit.
