Synopsis:

When the town's goldsmith Walter Aurifaber is robbed and believed left for dead, the local people suspect a young juggler who was performing at the wedding feast of the goldsmith's son. A mob chases the juggler, Lilliwen, who runs into the Abbey mid-service to claim sanctuary. Brother Cadfael is given the job of looking after him, and of attending the goldsmith's elderly mother. Believing in Lilliwen's innocence Cadfael sets about investigating into what happened, especially when the murdered body of a neighbour of the Aurifabers turns up in the river.
