Synopsis:
Drama set in Rome in 1943 where Giovanni Forte, a film director, is shooting a film called 'Redenzione' with financial support from the Vatican. At that time Mussolini was trying to move the entire Italian film industry to Venice under the new Republic of Salo. Giovanni Forti, as well as some of the cast and crew members, is antifascist and sees the film as a way to avoid leaving Rome. The story is partly inspired by De Sica's experience with Le PORTE DEL CIELO, shot in similar circumstances and with a plot similar to 'Rendenzione' - where an aristocratic woman gives away her money and devotes her life to the poor and sick.
