Synopsis:

Near seaside in Brittany: Anna, 50 years old, moves into her new house. Rooms are full of boxes which contain a lot of things& Plenty of memories. Anna has lived many lives and her past comes out of these boxes. Her parents surely, but also her children and their fathers, the living and the dead. Anna had three girls, each of them from a different father, coming to her, like parents and daughters, to talk to her, to rebuke her and perhaps to forgive her. In this breakneck period of her life, time is running faster and faster and Anna takes a run-up to face the past and try to go towards the future. And, maybe, to manage to still believe in love?

The French-language psychological drama Boxes - which represents veteran actress Jane Birkin's (Blow-up) directorial debut on a narrative feature - constitutes an extended, theatrically garrulous meditation on the rift of understanding inevitable between parents and children. In addition to directing, Birkin also stars, as Anna, a fiftysomething woman in the throes of menopause, who journeys to her family's summer home in Brittany and leafs through the boxes of the title, filled to the brims with mementos and tidbits of family history. As Anna pours over the contents, individuals from her life materialize before her eyes, including her venerable deceased father (Michel Piccoli), her three daughters by different men (Natacha Regnier, Lou Doillon and Adele Exarchopoulos), and her headstrong mother (Geraldine Chaplin). The journey into the past thus becomes a cerebral and philosophical meditation on familial relationships, and an exploration of such themes as love, faithfulness, betrayal, and changes wrought by the ravages of time.

At the Brittany seaside, Anna, a fifty-year-old Englishwoman, has just moved in to her new house. The rooms are crammed full of boxes containing objects and, with them, memories. As she opens the boxes, out come husbands and lovers, children and parents, the dead and the living...
