Synopsis:
Sigmund Freud suggested that we all have a 'death drive'; an instinct which prods us towards destruction and non-existence. Toni, the subject of Xavier Baig's and Oscar Moreno's documentary, appears to embrace this theory. Physically deteriorating because of his substance abuse and accumulating illness count, Toni has lost none of his petulant charm. He knows that he is approaching death but he remains unapologetic for his sins; instead, Toni justifies his lifestyle, condemns those around him for being 'ordinary' and repeatedly insinuates that he is omnipotent. Despite his addiction, every time he inhales oxygen to combat this, he follows it up with a splif. It is not Toni's likeability which compels one to continue watching Hoy el Dia se Repite Diferente but rather the fascinating manner with which he deals with his impending death. With surprising depth, the nature of motivation, definition, purpose and identity Hoy el Dia se Repite Diferente shows a humanizing vulnerability which is punctuated by a moment of realization: "It's incredible" he remarks about the Spanish sunset, finally aware of his own insignificance. Whilst Baig and Moreno are careful not to weigh down their film with intrusive symbols, they do effectively use cinematic devices to accentuate the film's visually stunning portrait. The rhythm of the film, for example, is perfectly sustained by the use of colorful and beautiful montages which also act to juxtapose the grim, sinister grayness of Toni's home and hospital room.

You don't decide to be an addict. One morning you wake up sick and you're an addict," writes William S. Burroughs in his cult book Junkie, from which Spanish directors Xavier Baig and Òscar Moreno borrowed the motto for their film. Their main character is Toni, a 49-year-old addict. After thirty years on heroin, he has to get up during the night every two hours to inhale oxygen, otherwise he'd suffocate. Then immediately after inhaling, he lights up a joint, otherwise he wouldn't get back to sleep again. He knows that the drugs are slowly killing him, but he just can't resist them. In this formally diverse, at times visually stunning portrait, immersed in an excellent soundtrack by Micka Luna, we glimpse into the inner world of Toni, a highly intelligent, well-travelled man with a unique life philosophy. A gravely ill man whose only love in life, apart from drugs, is his dog. A man who only has six months left to live.
