Synopsis:
A female criminal officer is in charge of the investigation. A lady's hat is found drifting in the Akerselven river it belongs to Eva. Has she committed suicide? But why? Neither her husband nor their friends understand what may have happened. None of them has perceived how difficult it has been for the young, plain wife to adjust to which the intellectual circles her marriage to the scientist has introduced her. None of them has had any knowledge of her past, which is now unraveled. Before she got married, Eva had entered a relationship with a pharmacist who was addicted to drugs. Her girl friend tried to keep her from it, but in vain. Love was too strong, she sacrificed everything for the pharmacist, and gradually she herself became a slave to morphine. It ended in disaster, she was admitted to an institution for treatment, and then apparently cured. Soon after, she met associate professor Berger. They got married, and the future seemed rosy. No one understood how much pain it caused the young girl to feel intellectually inferior and kept out. No one understood that she had to turn to stimulants to be able to stand it. Until one day when she, after a wild, but unsuccessful hunt for morphine, flees from it all and looks up her friend from the past.
