Synopsis:

In 1939, 12-year old Steffi and her younger sister Nelli depart from Austria for Gothenburg, Sweden, leaving their troubled Jewish parents behind. Nazi persecution has made life dangerous. The sisters are placed in separate foster homes on a small island. The culture clash between the girls sophisticated Vienna upbringing and the simple, everyday struggle of the Lutheran fishermen is harsh. As the war breaks out the sisters are trapped in Sweden, and they are forced to adjust as best they can, finding comfort and even love within their new families and country, awaiting the much longed-for reunion with their parents.
