Synopsis:

In this meditation on family, romance, and the search for contentedness from French director Andre Techine (THE WILD REEDS, MY FAVORITE SEASON), a troubled young man named Martin (Alexis Loret), rethinks his past. At age 20, Martin finds himself living with his bohemian brother Benjamin (Matthieu Amalric) in Paris, after fleeing from their father's house for an unexplainable reason. Benjamin's violinist roommate, Alice (Juliette Binoche) responds to Martin, who falls obsessively in love with her. Alice quickly becomes pregnant. Though Martin has a profitable modeling job, and is very close with Alice--who will do anything to help him--he cannot stop worrying about his past, and is tortured by it in his dreams at night.

Andre Techine's sprawling, emotional love story is the kind of movie that makes you work a little. It takes time to figure out the relationships between the characters, to say nothing of their motives and feelings. But like so many of Mr. Techine's movies, ''Alice and Martin'' repays the effort. The unlikely, complicated passion between Martin, the troubled illegitimate son of a wealthy industrialist, and Alice, a brittle violinist, unfolds against an equally complicated and sometimes overcrowded background of family secrets and shifting domestic alliances. Juliet Binoche and Alexis Loret are superb in the title roles.

Raised in a small French town by his single mother, a hairdresser named Jeanine, 10-year-old Martin is sent to live with Victor, his tyrannical father. Victor has a family of his own: a wife, Lucie, and three sons, Francois, Frederic, and Benjamin. Twelve years later, Martin remains scarred by his childhood. Having fled his father's home, he arrives in Paris and finds refuge with his half-brother Benjamin, now an actor, and Benjamin's violinist roommate, Alice. After achieving success as a model, Martin puts the moves on Alice, whose initial wariness blossoms into genuine love. But the sudden prospect of fatherhood reawakens Martin's repressed guilt about the death of his father, and Alice must fight to preserve his sanity.
