Synopsis:
In "The World Unseen," a trembling soap of racial oppression and lesbian longing, three Indian women endure South African apartheid in the 1950s with strategies as diverse as their personalities. For Amina (Sheetal Sheth), it's all about defiance. Invariably attired in snazzy men's wear, she flouts the law by owning a cafe with the racially mixed Jacob (David Dennis) and encouraging mixed-race dining. For Miriam (Lisa Ray), complete subservience to her controlling husband, Omar (Parvin Dabas), and two children is the way to go. Only the slinky Farah (Natalie Becker) has found relief beneath the radar, sleeping with Omar while Miriam scrubs. Directed by Shamim Sarif and based on her novel of the same title, "The World Unseen" never begins to tap the talent at its disposal.

Set in 1950s South Africa at the beginning of apartheid, free-spirited Amina has broken all the rules of her own conventional Indian community and the new apartheid-led government, by running a cafe with Jacob, her black business partner. When she meets Miriam, a young wife and mother, their unexpected attraction pushes Miriam to question the rules that bind her to a traditional role. As Amina helps Miriam's sister-in-law to hide from the police, a chain of events is set in motion that changes both women forever.

Set in and around Pretoria, South Africa during the apartheid era, during the 1950's. Against the background of laws such as the Group Areas Act and the Immorality Act, unfolds the story of an unusual love between two Indian women who are very different from each other. Amina is emancipated and free- willed, whilst Miriam is a traditional wife and mother.
