Synopsis:
Hubertus Siegert's German-language documentary is about the rebuilding of post-wall Berlin. After the Berlin Wall came down in 1989, there were suddenly real estate problems because of the newly freed land under and around the former wall and into what used to be East Berlin. What is more important, the situation cried out for new buildings fashioned to unite the formerly divided city. The film could easily have become a poisonous melodrama of builders and politicians fighting for power, looking to lay a claim to remake the Berlin area. But 'Babylon' mostly shows us the concentration of people assessing design problems, working out contracting and construction problems and moving on to the next thing. As each building ascends, the gaping wound in the middle of Berlin begins to close.

In 1989 the Berlin Wall comes down. A city divided for nearly half a century begins to rebuild. With its destruction, the Wall left fallow many square miles of what was now prime urban real estate. Shot over a 5-year period, the chronicle records the myriad controversies at the heart of a massive building campaign by international companies anxious to make their mark in the new European capital. Among the leading architects brought in to seize the moment are Gunther Behnisch, Werner Durth, Meinhard von Gerkan, Godfrid Haberer, Helmut Jahn, Joseph Paul Kleihues, Ioeh Ming Pei, Rem Koolhaas, Hans Kollhoff, Axel Schultes and Renzo Piano.

Documentary. Ever since the fall of the Berlin wall in 1989, the city has been busy building in a bid to shake off the shadows of the past. The film shows a city in the throes of transformation, with music providing the only commentary.
