Synopsis:
Donal, a young kid, escapes his own life by working for a greyhound trainer after school. When one of the unsuccessful dogs is condemned, Donal speaks up and manages to persuade his boss to let him try and train it. If the dog wins three races Donal can take the dog as his own...

From the moment 14-year old Donal sets eyes on the fawn greyhound, he knows he's onto a winner. Donal works at a kennels and convinces his boss that he can turn the dog into 'a ball of speed' and if he wins three races, then the dog belongs to Donal! As he trains him, the bond between them grows, just like the bond between his mother and estranged father, who has returned home after many years away. All Donal wants is to keep the dog and restore family life, but he learns that he must make a huge sacrifice on the way.

Young Donal lives alone with his mother in Belfast. After school he works for Good Joe, a local greyhound trainer, and does a deal with him that if he can train the greyhound The Mighty Celt to win three races in a row then it is his. The reappearance of O back in the neighbourhood has an affect on both Donal and his mother, as the latter reveals that O is his father. Donal and O become close and O prevents Donal from shooting Good Joe when the latter cheats at the greyhound race and reneges on his deal with Donal.
