Synopsis:
In this Royal Shakespeare Company production of August Strindberg's classic play, Academy Award Winner Helen Mirren gives an acclaimed performance as the bored and restless daughter of a Count who finds herself getting involved with the arrogant and forceful Jean (Donal McCann), her father's footman.

After a flirtatious encounter at the servants' Midsummer party, both Julie and Jean see each other as a means of escape from the trappings of their lives. Together they plan their getaway, but it is an alliance which can only end in tragedy.

With a typically show-stealing performance, Mirren is at her very best in this early role that set her on the road to stardom.

Royal Shakespeare Company's production at The Place in 1971 of Strindberg's tragedy. Tells of the unhappy love affair between the daughter of a nobleman and her father's valet. Made in 1972.
