Synopsis:
ASCENT TO HEAVEN is a life affirming comedy/drama that centres on Oliverio, a young newly wed enjoying his honeymoon. The peace and solitude is soon shattered when Oliverio brothers arrive and insist on taking him home to see their ailing mother. Once back, Oliverio learns of his motherÂ's concerns; realising that she has little time left and that her other sons are not to be trusted, Oliverio is charged with finding a solicitor to legitimise his mother's will. Easy? Not quite, as Oliverio soon fins out when he is forced to take an unforgettable journey on a beaten-up bus, across rivers, mountains and forests. This lost classic from Luis Bunuel (LE CHIEN ANDALOU, BELLE DE JOUR) shows the director a t his most playful.

Better known as Ascent to Heaven, Luis Bunuel's Mexican Bus Ride is a genial surrealistic comedy with many of the earmarks but little of the elegant cruelty of Bunuel's later works. Esteban Marquez plays a young bridegroom who is called away from the altar. Marquez's mother is dying, necessitating a bumpy two-day ride in a rickety bus to the little village where mama resides. En route, Marquez meets many eccentric characters, and is detained in a variety of mirth-provoking ways. Once he's arrived, Marquez is prevented from returning to his wedding by legal squabble's over mama's will.

A newlywed couple dash back from their honeymoon when the groom's mother falls ill. However, upon their return they discover that his brothers have been neglecting their duty to care for mum, preferring to plot the spending of the inevitable inheritance. What follows is a long bus ride to get his old dear's will changed to the contrary, where temptation faces him at every turn.
