Synopsis:

The fall of communism has left Albania a swarming chaos of starvation and corruption--ripe for the picking by foreign swindlers. Enrico, an Italian con man, wants to set up a dummy factory with his partner, but must head the company with an Albanian. They pick Spiro, a demented 80-year-old just released from 50 years of hard labor, to be the figurehead president. But when Spiro runs away into the countryside, Enrico sets after him and is gradually stripped of the chic trappings he's taken for granted back home. Finally, he's reduced to joining the thousands of Albanian refugees trying to escape to a better life in Italy.

An opportunistic Italian swindler heads to Albania and finds himself involved with the life of an impoverished local in this somber political drama. Gino (Enrico Lo Verso) and his partner in crime Fiore (Michele Placido) come to Albania with a money-making scheme designed to capitalize on the surrounding political chaos. For the con to work, however, they need an easily exploitable native Albanian, and they recruit Spiro (Carmelo Di Mazzarelli). Easily confused and utterly impoverished, this elderly former political prisoner seems the perfect choice, until he unexpectedly disappears. Gino is assigned to find him, setting out on a journey that leads him to discover Spiro's tragic personal history and become intimately acquainted with the full extent of Albanian poverty.

Story about the economical despair in post-Communistic Albania. Two Italians go to Albania to buy a shoe-factory only to cash in on Italian government aid to support Albanian economy. In order to have a local majority partner they choose 80-year-old Spiro who spent twenty years in a labour camp.
