Synopsis:
When a boorish German entrepreneur falls prey to a notorious, Kenya-based banking scam, his last-ditch effort reclaim his cash by traveling to Africa and confronting the con-artist serve as a noble epilogue to a reckless life in director Hans Steinbichler's dramatic account of one man's downward spiral. A diagnosed manic-depressive whose impulsive behavior only serves to further isolate him from his increasingly irritated family and friends, Franz Brenninger (Josef Bierbichler) is a once-wealthy businessman who has since fallen on hard times. When Franz receives letter promising a healthy payoff if he simply allows millions of dollars to be transferred through his German bank account, he enlists the aid of Kurdish translator Leyla (Sibel Kekilli) and secures the 50,000 Euros needed to seal the deal, telling his trusting son Xaver (Philipp Hochmair) that he is going to use the cash to pay for his ailing wife Martha (Hanna Schygulla)'s much-needed eye surgery. Upon realizing that he has been scammed and has nothing left to lose, Franz quickly scrounges whatever funds he can gather and travels to Nairobi with Leyla in hopes of confronting the elusive con artist and getting the money back.

A depressed, bankrupt man is victim of a scam in Kenya. He then has to fly to Nairobi with Leyla, a young translator, to recover the money he should have invested in an urgent operation for his wife. Whilst in Africa he transforms from the depressive man he was, and, with nothing left to lose, he can indulge in his love of singing and wants to stay in Africa. But first, he tries to ensure that his family back home are well-provided.

Winter in Bavaria. Franz Brenninger, owner of a hardware company, is a man of good reputation and no little wealth. His two children have long since grown up and he enjoys the loyal support of his wife Martha. But Brenninger is tormented by an inner unrest. He has his phases: either boundless euphoria or deepest dejection. If he's on a high, he loses contact with reality, picks quarrels with everyone and squanders his money inordinately. More and more junk mail begins to arrive: invoices, reminders, de mands. Brenninger's company is about to go broke. Fortunately a letter arrives from Africa. Kenyan businessmen propose a 'deal': they will 'park' 15 million dollars in his account and he will earn a sizable commission. Brenninger needs money for his company and for an urgent eye operation for his wife. In one of his manic phases he throws caution to the wind and closes the deal.
