Synopsis:
This Scandinavian tragedy is based on a novel by Knut Hamsun and centers on the reminiscences of Lt. Thomas Glahn, a big-game hunter, as he reflects upon the woman who continues to haunt him even though he has 'quite forgotten' her. The story jumps back four years. It is summer in an isolated Norwegian fishing village. There the hunter lives in a leased hut in the middle of a forest. His only companion is Aesop, his beloved hunting dog. While there, he encounters Edvarda, a merchant's daughter; for both it is love at first sight. They begin innocently trysting at night in the forest, but their physical expressions of love are limited to the occasional kiss. At the beginning of their relationship, Glahn gives Edvarda two green feathers. Glahn reveres this young woman, and though she would like him to make love to her, he cannot. The woman gets frustrated and the relationship begins to sour. Glahn then begins a sexual relationship with a married woman and Edvarda marries another. Later a tragedy occurs and Glahn does something terribly cruel to Edvarda before he leaves. She returns the feathers.

Based on the novel PAN by Knut Hamsun and set in Norway. Glahn, a stranger from the south of Norway, arrives at a small northern settlement on the edge of a forest. He spends his days hunting and fishing, only buying his supplies from the settlement. One day he meets Edvarda, the daughter of a local businessman and their mutual attraction develops into a relationship that is doomed to failure as neither is willing to make the compromise that would be necessary in a stable, viable love affair. Edvarda ends up marrying a German baron and Glahn travels to India where he hunts big game and seeks comfort in alcoholic and sexual excesses. One day he receives a letter containing two green feathers which revives memories of Edvarda.

When Edvarda arrives at the little Norwegian village, to stay with some family, she find the Lt., Thomas Glahn, very interesting. Soon they fall in love. It's a very passionate relationship, but this leads to problems. Both of them are very strong in their opinions, and both are behaving a little strange. Love turns to hate, and instead of doing all they can to please each other, they do all they can to hurt the other person psychological. They both do a great job, and what began as a love story turns into a sad and depressing story of two ruined persons. The story is told by Thomas Glahn from his 'exile' in Thailand, where he in the beginning of the movie receives two green feathers from Edvarda.
