1. The Tales of Hoffman (1951)
Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger create a phantasmagoric marriage of cinema and opera in this one of a kind take on a classic story. In Jacques Offenbach's fantasy opera The Tales of Hoffman, a poet dreams of three women - a mechanical performing doll, a bejeweled siren, and the consumptive daughter of a famous composer - all of whom break his heard in different ways. Powell and Pressburger's feverishly romantic adaptation is a feast of music, dance, and visual effects, and one of the most exhilarating opera films ever produced.
2. Black Narcisus (1946)
Powell and Pressburger added to their run of daring, stimulating and stylistic pictures with this melodrama about a group of Anglican nuns establishing a remote mission high in the Himalayas. Their physical environment - extreme temperatures, illness and a young Indian Prince's perfume (Black Narcissus) - leads to psychological disturbance coupled with emotional weakness. Jealousy, sexual repression and hysteria all play their part in a fantastic climax which ripped through the British stiff upper lip attitude of the time. The casting is inspired, with brilliant performances from the principals, and the film deservedly won Oscars for Colour Cinematography and Art Direction.
3. A Matter of Life & Death (1946)
It's night over Europe, the night of the 2nd of May 1945. A crippled Lancaster Bomber struggles home across the English Channel, all crew dead save for the young pilot desperately scanning the radio for signs of life. His prayers are answered. June (Hunter), a young radio operator, picks up his signal, and in the final moments of the young flyer's life, a special bond is formed. The next morning washed up on an English beach, Squadron Leader Peter Carter (Niven) is alive, he finds June, and the two fall in love. Somehow he survived. It's a miracle, or is it? Peter Carter should have died that night; a heavenly escort missed him in the fog above the channel, and now he must face the celestial court of appeal for his right to live.
4. The Life & Death of Colonel Blimp (1943)
Follow the humorous exploits of exemplary British soldier Clive Candy as he battles to maintain his honor and proud gentlemanly conduct through romance, three wars, and a changing world. It's a romantic portrait of a career soldier and the pointed investigation into the nature of aging, friendship, and obsolescence.
5. A Canterbury Tale (1944)
This compelling drama by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger (A Matter of Life and Death, The Red Shoes) is now acknowledged as one of their finest films. Their re-working of Chaucer's epic fourteenth century tale, largely set in wartime Kent, centres on American army Sergeant John Smith, British Soldier Dennis Price and Landgirl Shiela Sim who, before making a modern-day pilgrimage to Canterbury, solve the bizarre mystery of a man who pours glue over the hair of village girls at night.
6. I Know Where I am Going (1945)
In Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger's stunningly photographed comedy, romance flourishes in an unlikely place - the bleak and moody Scottish Hebrides. Wendy Hiller stars as a headstrong young woman who travels to Scotland to marry a rich lord. Stranded by stormy weather, she meets a handsome naval officer (Roger Livesey) who threatens to thwart her carefully laid-out life plans...
7. 49th Parallel (1941)
49th Parallel is a powerful and important piece of World War 2 propaganda, which controversially was filmed from the point of view of a group of German soldiers. Asked to make a flag waver by the Ministry of Information, the brilliantly gifted film-making team of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger elected to set the action in Canada. The film features a stellar cast, who all waived their fees in the interests of the war. A Nazi U-boat is sunk by the Canadian Air Force and all the crew are lost except six men who had been sent ashore before the attack. They stumble across an Eskimo village where Scott, Peter and his Eskimo servant, Martin live. Also present is a French trapper, Johnnie (played by Laurence Olivier), who panics when held at gunpoint and is shot by one of the Nazis. After this the Allies send an S.O.S. plane, and it is the intention of the Nazis to hijack it and fly to neutral America. When the plane arrives, there is a scuffle but they manage to take off. Will they be caught before they kill again?
8. The Battle of the River Plate (1956)
Ten days before World War II, Germany's crack battleship, Admiral Graf Spee sails with orders to carry out action against Allied merchant shipping in the South Atlantic. Captained by Hans Langsdorff (Peter Finch) Graf Spee with her superior speed, sinks ship after ship. Meanwhile, the net is tightening round the German Killer. Outwitted by British Intelligence, the Germans are convinced Graf Spee is trapped by a massive naval force.
9. Ill Met By Moonlight (1957)
In Nazi-occupied Crete, British officers Fermor (Bogarde) and Moss (Oxley), aided by local patriots, are assigned the job of kidnapping German commander-in-chief Kreipe (Goring). The operation, if successful, will be an incredible propaganda coup for the Allies; while the abduction goes smoothly, the resultant chase across the rocky Cretan landscape proves anything but...
10. They're A Weird Mob (1966)
Based on a popular Australian novel, this comedy was produced Down Under in 1966. Nino Culotta Walter Chiari is an Italian journalist who is lured by his brother into coming to Australia to work for his paper there. But when Nino arrives in Sidney, he finds out that there is no paper; his brother has taken off with the investors' cash. Left in the lurch was his brother's business partner, Kay Kelly (Clare Dunne). Nino vows to pay off his brother's debt and gets a job as a bricklayer to do so. He also tries to woo Kay, but he is repeatedly rebuffed, with humorous results.
11. The Red Shoes (1948)
The tragic and romantic story of Vicky Page, the brilliant young dancer who must give up everything if she is to become a great ballerina, is one of Powell and Pressburger's most famous films. Creators of classics such as Black Narcissus, A Matter of Life And Death, and The Life And Death Of Colonel Blimp, they were renowned for their use of brilliant colour and wonderful costumes, and, with the exhilarating cinematography of Jack Cardiff, were among the most influential film makers of their time. The Red Shoes is one of the finest examples of their work, and has become an inspiration to artists, film makers and musicians all over the world.
