Synopsis:
Dr. Albert Schweitzer marched to his own beat, sacrificing a comfortable European life in return for serving the lepers of equatorial Africa. His wife Helen Bresslau, the nurse who accompanied him on this mission, renders a vivid and inspiring portrait of his work.

ALBERT SCHWEITZER: Called to Africa is a docu-drama production that tells the story of Albert Schweitzer, through the eyes of his wife, Helene. Accomplished Broadway actors Jeff McCarthy (Albert Schweitzer) and Anne Torsiglieri (Helene Schweitzer) bring to life the struggles of a Victorian-era marriage complicated by fame, illness and a haunting call to serve the suffering half a world away. Helene was a nurse who shared her husband's dream of carving a medical center out of the rugged African jungle. But illness cut short her participation in that dream, forcing her to remain in Europe while Schweitzer continued without her in Africa.

Dr. Albert Schweitzer is remembered around the world as one of the great humanitarians of the 20th century. He won the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1953 for his medical work in healing the sick and injured from his hospital in what is now Gabon, West Africa. In his public life he was a towering figure - a jungle doctor, accomplished philosopher, pastor and celebrated musician - revered by royalty and the famous of his day. Yet the price of his fame was paid for in part by his wife and daughter, left behind in Europe while he pursued his African dream.
