Synopsis:
Set against the background of early 19th century France, this is the story of Jean Valjean (Gerard Depardieu), an ex-convict who becomes mayor, but is haunted by his past. He meets a beautiful but desperately ill woman named Fantine (Charlotte Gainsbourg) and cares for her daughter Cosette (Virginie Ledoyen) after her death. However Valjean is obsessively pursued by the policeman Javert (John Malkovich) who wants him to account for his past crimes.
