Synopsis:

This Swedish-Mozambican-Portuguese co-production is based on a novel by popular Swedish author Henning Mankell, a resident of Mozambique. Jose (Joao Manja) is a baker in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique. After Jose finds 10-year-old street-kid Nelio (Sergio Titos) bleeding from a gunshot wound, Nelio's account leads into a flashback: With a civil war in his village, he was taken to a training camp, but during a shooting lesson, he used the rifle against his captor and ran away. Approaching strangers for directions, he eventually arrived in the town where he joined other street kids, eliminating their exploitative boss and gaining a reputation as a healer. Finally, when the war neared the town, events from his past caught up with him. Shown at the 1998 Rotterdam Film Festival.

One night, a young man hears gunfire from the deserted theatre adjacent to his bakery. He investigates and finds the wounded body of Nelio, a young street kid who has learnt to survive the city by living on his wits. With his life ebbing away, Nelio tells his own story, and that of his friends. Nelio's Story is based on the novel 'Chronicler Of The Winds' by Swedish crime writer Henning Mankell. The film retains a recurring Mankell motif, of questioning what goes wrong in society.

Based on the book by Henning Mankell (Sweden), this story takes place in Mozambique and is about a young boy, Nelio, who loses his entire family during a time of civil war. A wounded Nelio is found by a baker in the capital Mapouto; refusing medical treatment, the boy instead asks for sanctuary so he can tell his terrible tale. This he proceeds to do, starting with how the fighters arrived in his village and slaughtered many, to his captivity, his escape and his teaming with other orphaned street urchins to become their leader in survival.
