Synopsis:
The Moon with Teeth (LA LUNE AVEC LES DENTS) - 1967
The international cinematic new wave came bursting into the Swiss cinema through the work of Michel Soutter, whose La lune avec les dents (The Moon with Teeth) became practically a manifesto of the movement. The film follows William, thirty-ish, out of work and looking for a new life after apparently having been thrown out of his previous one. He meets up with Noelle, who seems intrigued by his restlessness - until her economist boyfriend shows up. Yet plot details do little to convey the power of the film, which lay in its capturing the anarchic texture of William's life - a life whose lack of direction was read as a rebuke of the Swiss myth of orderliness and self-satisfaction. With his roots in documentary, Soutter excelled at creating a loose, vibrant cinema, full of quick zooms and dynamic hand-held shots, with dialogue that often alternated between outright quotations and stylized interviews. Almost completely rejected in its era, La lune avec les dents is now widely seen as a milestone for Swiss cinema.

Hashish (Haschisch) - 1968

The Apple (La Pomme) - 1969
This rambling and slightly experimental drama attempts to pass itself off as 'relevant' to the 'youth revolution' of the 1960s. The story follows the attempts of a girl who has spent the last year living outside her native Switzerland to rekindle a former love affair. When her immature young friend fails to demonstrate the requisite interest, she takes up with someone the boy disapproves of. When the boy kicks the man, the man leaves both the boy and his erstwhile ex-girlfriend to their own devices. Interspersed with jokes, visual puns, and quasi-philosophical discussions, this description of the film is of necessity far more coherent than the real thing.

James Or Not (James ou pas) - 1970
This unusual satire finds a taxi driver and a passenger believing they have met before and know each other from somewhere. When the passenger's weekend mistress joins the two men, she falls for the cab driver. The cab driver's former girlfriend ends up falling for his partner who drives the vehicle on the night shift. The two men are left alone one night when the women leave together.

The Swiss filmmaker Michel Soutter Romand was born in Geneva in 1932. He joined the Swiss television in 1961, he wrote and directed the first drama. In 1967, he shot the moon with the teeth. The first film opens the breach of the new Swiss cinema which is the precursor with fellow Alain Tanner and Claude Goretta. Author of ten feature films, Michel Soutter also conducts numerous TV shows, movies, and is experiencing a significant career as a director in theater and opera. In cinema he worked with Jean-Louis Trintignant, Marie Dubois (The Getaway, 1972), Jean-Louis Trintignant, Delphine Seyrig, Lea Massari and Valerie Mairesse (Repérages, 1977), Heinz Bennent, Pierre Clementi and Jean-Marc Bory (The Love of Women, 1981), Pierre Arditi (Condorcet, 1989).
