Synopsis:
Element Of Crime (1984):
This visually stunning debut sees a police detective, Fisher (played by Michael Elphick), attempting to solve a series of grisly crimes by becoming the killer himself. Awash with cinematic allusions, it's a foretaste of what the
fledgling director would become.
Epidemic (1988):
Previously unreleased in the UK, this is a truly experimental film with echoes of the director's later films; The Idiots and Dogville. Starring the director as the lead and using no camera crew, the story follows a doctor attempting to stop the spread of a plague who only succeeds in spreading it further.
Europa (1991):
Set in Germany after the Second World War, this drama follows an idealistic young American of German descent (Jean-Marc Barr) as he tries to help re-build a damaged country, by working on the railways, whilst remaining neutral to the conflicting forces therein. To complicate matters, he falls in love with his employer's daughter and soon realises that he will have to make some difficult choices.

Lars Von Trier is considered one of world cinema's great auteurs. His reputation has been built upon controversial and experimental films such as The Idiots, Dancer In The Dark and Dogville, that often divide audiences. However, he found his own unique voice with three early projects which have come to be known as the E-Trilogy: Element of Crime, Epidemic and Europa - all dramas concerned with the nature of identity.

The Element of Crime (1984)

Fisher, an ex-cop, returns to his old beat somewhere in northern Europe after a thirteen-year hiatus in Cairo. His former mentor and role model, author of a treatise called "The Element of Crime", asks him to solve a series of murders involving lottery ticket sellers. Guided by the theories put forth in the book, Fischer retraces the steps of a suspect, Harry Grey, as recorded in a three-year-old police surveillance report.

Epidemic (1987)

The screenwriters Lars and Niels are writing the screenplay of an outbreak like many other plagues in Europe. In the story, the renowned epidemiologist Dr. Mesmer decides to leave the Faculty of Medicine to go to the outskirt of the city to give assistance to the inhabitants. Soon, a mysterious disease is spread in the real world. Then the writers travel to Germany for a meeting and then they visit their producer, where they meet a hypnotized woman that is sick.

Europa (1991)

An American of German descent arrives in post-war Germany 1945. His uncle gets him a job on the Zentropa train line as a sleeping car conductor. The American's wish is to be neutral to the ongoing purges of loyalists by the Allied forces and do what he can to help a hurting country, but he finds himself being used by both the Americans and the influential family that owns the railroad. After falling in love with the railroad magnate's daughter, he finds that he can't remain neutral and must make some difficult choices.

The Element of Crime (1984)

A cop in a dystopian Europe investigates a serial killings suspect using controversial methods written by his now disgraced former mentor.

Epidemic (1987)

A film director and a script writer (performed by Lars von Trier and Niels Vørsel themselves) write a screenplay, in which an epidemic spreads about the whole world. Like the protagonist they do not notice, that a real epidemic is developing around them.

Europa (1991)

Just after WW2, an American takes a railway job in Germany, but finds his position politically sensitive with various people trying to use him.
