Synopsis:
We are richer than ever before. We live longer, own more property and induldge in greater luxuries. So why aren't we getting any happier? One concern, above all, keeps us awake at night: status. Am I a success? Have I made it? Do I have the right car, the right clothes? Do people think I'm a loser and should I really care? Specially designed in easy to navigate segments to dip in and out of, writer and presenter Alain de Botton challenges the idea that what we do, where we live and what we own, should define our status and determine our happiness.

Philosopher and author Alain de Botton looks at status anxiety in society, the importance of status to many and anxiety about whether they are successful or not in the eyes of a society. Looks particularly at USA where belief in opportunity for any prepared to work hard and take it is a central facet of society. Also considers others who do not subscribe to this notion or anxiety, including punks, anarchists, nudists, philosophers and religions, and how awareness of mortality can put things in perspective.

Writer and presenter Alain De Botton explores the myth that our level of material wealth and career success has a bearing on our happiness and spiritual contentment.
