Synopsis:

Drama about General Pinochets remarkable exile in the UK, Pinochet In Suburbia tells the story of a holiday trip that led to the Generals arrest and subsequent detention for some 500 days, from October 1998 to spring 2000. The story delicately weaves several narrative strands, including a tense and intricate legal battle. The Generals fate hung in the balance for over a year as the decision over whether to extradite him was taken. Would he face trial for the atrocities that took place under his regime, or would his legal team successfully appeal that such proceedings were beyond the jurisdiction of any international court?

In 1998 former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet visits Britain for medical treatment. On being tipped off, Amnesty International seize the chance to bring to justice a man they insist is guilty of multiple human rights violations. The newly-elected Labour government is initially amenable, and soon Pinochet is under house arrest (albeit in a detached house in leafy suburbia) and awaiting extradition to Spain. However, Amnesty are up against the complexities of British law, the vacillations of Home Secretary Jack Straw, Pinochet's former ally Margaret Thatcher - and the Senator's own vast reserves of cunning.

On September 11, 1973 a military coup, led by General Augusto Pinochet, overthrew the democratically elected socialist government of Salvador Allende. The chronicle poses an investigation into the 1973-1990 regime of Pinochet who then became Chile's dictator. Responsible for the deaths of 1,198 Chileans, Pinochet's reign of terror included secret arrests, torture and the assassination of his political enemies. Through interviews with survivors and his victims' families, a portrait of Pinochet as a major untried criminal emerges. Although Pinochet was arrested in London in 1998, charged with the torture and death of Spanish citizens, he was eventually released. He then returned to Chile, where he was living in retirement until protests by the Chilean people finally led to his house arrest, in January 29, 2001.
