Synopsis:

Serbian director Uros Stajanovic's gender-themed period allegory TEARS FOR SALE unfolds in Pokrp - a rural village in the 1920s-era Balkans - where nearly the entire male population (save one individual) has been decimated by the ravages of war. This leaves untold number of love-starved female residents craving male companionship; when sisters Ognjenka and Boginja accidentally kill off the last male, execution by the other female members of the village is a near certainty. The siblings receive a second chance, however, in the form of an ultimatum: they must set out on a quest to retrieve one virile male and bring him back to the village. If they can succeed in this task, their lives will be spared. Thus, the women embark on a journey into the surrounding country; en route they happen upon such discoveries as the lusty and lascivious Dance Hall King of Belgrade and an impossibly vain muscleman.

The movie's plot is set during 1920s in post-World War I Serbia. Rebuilding after a gruelling armed conflict in which it lost a sizable part of its young male population, the nation is struggling to recover demographically. The situation is especially visible in certain rural parts where this shortage of men threatens to extinguish life completely.Two sisters, Ognjenka and Mala Boginja from a fictional Pokrp village that has no males of marrying age set off for the city in search of good men to bring home.

Story of two sisters that grew up in a small Serbian village in the beginning of the 1920s. The village is torn up by wars and years long blood oath. There are no men left in the village. Our heroines, Ognjenka and Mala Boginja decide to go to the city, kidnap men and return life to their village. The lights of the metropolis dazzle them and there starts this little amusing and sentimental adventure.
