Synopsis:
Among the late Rohmer's finest films, the fourth in the Moral Tales series tells the story of a chaste and conservative thirty-something (Jean-Louis Trintignant, Three Colours Red) who unwittingly spends the night at the apartment of the worldly and spirited divorcée Maud (Françoise Fabian), throwing the moral certainties of his life into question.

The narrator (Jean-Louis), a devout Catholic, moves to a provincial town and vows to marry Francoise, a pretty blond he notices at mass. Vidal, an old school friend, invites him to visit the recently divorced Maud, and the narrator ends up staying the night, having philosophical discussions in her bedroom. Next morning the narrator engineers a meeting with Francoise.

A devout Catholic engineer, who has his mind set on marrying a nice girl he sees at church, spends a chaste night with a liberated divorcee named Maud. Consequently, the encounter forces him to reassess his own moral standing.
