Synopsis:
A Zed and Two Noughts follows the lives of Alba Bewick, and Oswald and Oliver Deuce. When an accident with a white swan leaves Alba without a leg and the Deuce's wives dead the trio must cope with a scheming doctor and their own grief. It is the brothers' grief that leads to their fixation with natural decay of animal flesh. As they progress in their grief process they seek more and more complex animals to watch fade away. The brothers' obsessions leaves them in peril of losing their jobs and drives them closer to the person at the wheel when their wives perished, Alba. In the end, their insatiable apetite for decay leads them to the top of the food chain - Humans. But who must meet an end for the evolution of Oliver and Oswald's grief?

The always elliptical Peter Greenaway once again creates a beautiful film-as-puzzle. This tale concerns twin zoologist brothers whose wives are killed in a freak car crash involving a rare swan. The brothers form an unusual and strangely close relationship with Alba, the woman who was driving the car, now an amputee. Preoccupied with death and decomposition, the brothers organise elaborate studies on the decomposition of animals, making time-lapse films of dalmatians and zebras to chart the decay. Cue the scurrying hoards of snails and Michael Nyman's thrilling frenetic score. When Alba herself dies, the twins decide to join her in death, and set about filming their own decaying human bodies. Greenaway's fascination with the Dutch painter Vermeer, is evident in A ZED & TWO NOUGHTS, particularly in the lighting.David Cronenberg made his own version of the story in 1988 as DEAD RINGERS with Jeremy Irons playing the twins.

This twisted black comedy is obsessed in turn with swans, twins, and decay. Alba Bewick (Andréa Ferréol) is involved in a swan-related car accident near the zoo. The accident kills two other women, the wives of two twin zoologists, Oliver and Oswald Deuce (Brian and Eric Deacon). Alba is lucky enough to escape with one leg. Eventually her doctor also removes the other "because it was dangerous for the spine." Meanwhile, the Deuce brothers, as a result of losing their wives, have become fascinated with the decay of corpses, and they start making rather gruesome time-lapse films to examine the process more thoroughly. Both brothers become involved with Alba. Needless to say, this film may not appeal to everybody.
