Synopsis:

Ives-Yuri Garate's directorial debut film 'Alex and Leo' ('Alex und der Löwe,' world premiere, Germany 2010, 97 minutes) finds several young Germans in search of love. Alex (Andre Schneider, also the screenwriter and producer) walks in on his lover, soon to be ex-lover, Daniel (Hans Hendrik Trost), screwing someone else, with a camera rolling. It is much to the relief of Alex's friends-Tobi (Udo Lutz), Steffi Graf (Sascia Haj, as a psychiatrist, not as the tennis player), and Kersten (Beate Kurecki)-that Daniel is no more, and all of them want to help to make Alex feel better. Meanwhile, Leo (Marcel Schlutt) and his girlfriend Carla (Barbara Kowa) are giving a dinner party at which homosexuality is the hot topic of conversation. Leo asks one of the guests if he has ever kissed another man and the same question is asked of him. His reply ends his relationship with Carla. Alex and Leo, who had encountered each other once before, meet once again, by chance, through Steffi's patient Babette (Anna Gerloff), AKA the bed wetter, and the boys go off together. Tobi is finally able to say hello to the waiter Phillip (Hermann Eppert), when Tobi is playing music very loudly at 4 a.m., and the upstairs neighbor comes down to complain, and turns out to be none other than Phillip. Tobi and Phillip seem to hit it off, just when Alex and Leo's relationship starts to cool off. Alex and Leo want to call one another, but think better of it, until Tobi goes to Leo's apartment to bring him back to Alex, so that they can all be happy again, not just as individuals, but also as a group.

This is a great, clearly written, comic love story and feel-good movie, about how dreams can come true and what it means to have both friendship and love, with all actors delivering magnificent performances as hip Berliners, looking for love in all the wrong places.
