Synopsis:
1943, Italy's Salentino peninsula. Tony, an American fighter pilot, raised speaking Italian in New York, parachutes to safety and is hidden at the olive farm of Carmine, a man with three daughters. One is being courted by Pasquale, the son of the area's largest landowner. It is she, Cosima, whom Tony falls for. He gets to know her through the rhythms of the farm and a traditional way of life, expressed in spontaneous song and in pizzicatas (a courtship dance; a dance that enacts a knife fight between men; and, the frenzied tarantata - a woman's dance exorcising passion). As Carmine protects Tony and as Cosima begins to love him, Pasquale does not go gently.

The humble lives of a widowed Italian peasant and his three daughters are forever changed during the summer of 1943 when they take in a downed American pilot, whose distant relatives hail from the Salentino region where the story occurs. Because of his familial connections, patriarch Carmine is able to pass the American Toni off as his cousin to suspicious authorities. While stranded there, Toni comes to love the region and decides, since he was the only survivor of the crash and the army doesn't know his whereabouts, to remain there. Trouble brews when Toni and Carmine's daughter Cosima, who is engaged to the town's wealthiest bachelor, fall in love.

Set in Italy's Salentino peninsula in 1943, film focuses on a struggling peasant family comprising a widowed father and his three daughters. When a US fighter plane is shot down, they take in the sole survivor - whose grandparents came from the region - and pass him off as a cousin. An attraction develops between him and one of daughters - but she is promised to the son of a local wealthy family. The romantic film in regional setting is accompanied by Tarantella music and leads us through the three different kinds of the typical mediterranean "pizzica" dance.
