Synopsis:
A waiter discovers that good taste can be dangerous in this offbeat psychological drama from France. Nicolas (Jean-Pierre Lorit) is a young man living in bohemian poverty in Lyon, sharing a flat with his girlfriend Beatrice (Florence Thomassin) and three of their friends. Nicolas works part-time as a server, and one night a customer asks him to taste his hors d'oeuvres and see if he can identity the ingredients. Nicolas' palate meets the challenge, and the customer introduces himself as Frederic Delamont (Bernard Giraudeau), a wealthy business tycoon. Frederic hires Nicolas as his official food taster at a handsome salary. Frederic also discovers that Nicolas wears the same size shoes and suits, and he begins costuming Nicolas in his cast-offs. While Beatrice isn't comfortable with their newly luxurious lifestyle, Nicolas takes to it readily, until he becomes seriously ill after eating chemically-tainted seafood. It seems that Frederic loathes seafood, and wanted to condition Nicolas to hate it too -- this was to be the first step toward turning Nicolas into someone who could duplicate Frederic's likes and dislikes on all levels. Une Affaire De Gout was based on a novel by Philippe Balland.

This deliciously nasty French deconstruction of male pecking orders, directed by Bernard Rapp, should send a pleasant shiver down the spine of anyone who has ever obsessed about wanting to please a devious and manipulative boss. When that employer is as elegant and treacherous a narcissist as Frédéric Delamont (Bernard Giraudeau), the epicurean, insanely fastidious business mogul who hires a handsome young waiter named Nicholas (Jean-Pierre Lorit) to be his personal food taster, the very term "boss" takes on a new and sinister dimension. The film is somewhat undermined by being told in flashback as Nicolas, who appears to have just murdered his boss, responds to questions from a magistrate and a psychiatrist

A handsome young waiter named Nicolas is befriended by Frederic, a wealthy and mysterious middle-aged business executive. Frederic, a man of power, influence and strictly refined tastes is strangely smitten by Nicolas' charm and naivete. Lonely and phobic, Frederic offers Nicolas a lucrative job as his personal food taster, an offer that Nicolas cannot refuse. In spite of their differences, a close friendship begins to emerge between the two men. Soon, however, their bond of trust and admiration spirals downward into one of deceit and obsession with consequences for which neither is prepared.
