Synopsis:

Deep in the Hertfordshire countryside Thaxted Manor Hotel is home to The White House restaurant and it's resident head chef Roland White (Alan Davies). A former leading light of the London restaurant scene Roland is now a terminal slacker who relies on best friend and put upon sous chef Bib (Darren Boyd) to do all the hard work for him. With his brigade of staff including restaurant manager Caroline (Katherine Parkinson), dippy waitress Kiki (Isy Suttie), new apprentice Skoose (Stephen White) and hotel owner Celia (Maggie Steed) Roland is facing a difficult choice; to finally go for it and earn that first elusive Michelin star or just hide in his office and settle for the easy life.

Lazy chef Roland White is more concerned with dictating his - as yet uncommissioned - recipe book than cooking,which he leaves to harassed sous -chef Bib and his clumsy assistant Axel. To add to Bib's concerns cocky young Skoose arrives from the agency and declares that he will be sous-chef in two years. Roland pulls all the stops out though when he learns that a publisher is coming to dine at his restaurant. Unfortunately it turns out to be a publisher of map-books.

Bib worships the young television celebrity chef Shay Marshall. Roland thinks he stinks. However when restaurant manager Caroline insists Roland update his monotonous menus and lazy Roland delegates this to Bib, a visit by Shay,who gives Bib a copy of his new cook-book,results in some very exotic dishes on the menu.But not for long. Having explained to Bib that Shay was once his apprentice who stabbed him in the back and stole his staff Roland ensures that Shay ends up with food poisoning - due,of course,to the new bill of fare.

Skoose is only too pleased to be put in charge when Roland does his outdoor demonstration of Thai cookery,impressing glamorous promoter Alison Harris in the process, and then drives Bib to the fertility clinic. The health inspector is due but Roland tells Bib not to worry as he can always be bribed with a bottle of wine. Sadly for Roland,a different inspector calls, Ms. Critch,who takes a dim view of bribes and is not pleased with the state of the kitchen's hygiene. Roland sees the chance to soften her up by claiming to have a brother with Parkinson's Disease,which involves Bib playing along. Hopefully Caroline won't blow it and tell Ms. Critch the truth.

Roland annoys Bib yet again when he swans off to do a television cookery show,taking Skoose as his assistant,and leaving Bib to organize a large outdoor buffet. However,whilst Roland's television appearance is a disaster Bib seriously impresses visiting Australian restauranteur Darryl Somers,who invites him to be his chef at his new venue in Sydney. Bib accepts and tells Skoose he can be the new sous-chef after all.

Bib has officially left and Roland is missing him already as chaos reigns in the kitchen. Interviews for a replacement drag though one Beatrice seems the best - and prettiest - of a bad bunch. Even so,Roland is not happy as Celia hosts the evening's talent contest and nor are Caroline,feeling dumped as her vet boy-friend has just rushed off to see to a prize sow or Skoose,rejected for the sous-chef job. And then somebody reappears to make it all better.
