Synopsis:

Christopher Morahan directed this nail-biting suspense melodrama that takes a cynical look at the medical profession. Matthew Harris (Paul McGann) is an unhappy intern at a London hospital who envies the staff doctors and their calling. When a physician who resembles Matthew is killed in an auto accident, Matthew decides to assume his identity so that he can attend an interview the dead man had scheduled for a post at a Bristol hospital. Matthew gets the job and is now Dr. Simon Hennessey, working in the hospital emergency room. He is assisted by friendly nurse Christine Taylor (Amanda Donohue), who ends up falling in love with him. But Matthew makes a fatal mistake and a patient dies. At the ensuing inquest, Christine takes the blame for the accident. Matthew, emboldened by the results of the inquest, decides to apply for a better job at a hospital in Salisbury. But an acquaintance from his past appears and Matthew has to kill him in order to continue with his deception.

When a young doctor is killed in a car accident Matthew Harris a hospital porter sees his chance to escape a mundane existence. He steals the dead mans papers and successfully applies for the post of casualty officer at the Royal Clifton Hospital in Bristol. As Dr Simon Hennessey, he starts a new life in the town, but after the gory nightmare of his first shift, Matthew realises he has embarked upon a gamble he has little chance of winning. The disaster strikes when one of Matthew's patients dies. The medical profession closes ranks to protect one of their own kind and Matthew is saved from justice. Yet now the stakes in Matthew's outrageous bluff have been dramatically raised and when his past finally catches up with him, it seems as if one more death on his conscience will hardly matter...

With the papers of a young doctor who died in a deadly accident, the ambitious male nurse Matthew manages to get hired as a doctor in the casuality department of an hospital in Bristol. Nurse Christine believes it's only his nervousness, which makes him 'forget' the most basic procedures. But even her help cannot prevent that his lack of qualification soon has deadly consequences...
