Synopsis:
1943: A platoon of war weary Domobran soldiers prepares to defend a strategically valuable strip of land from outside forces wishing to invade the independent Croat state. 1993: A squadron of HVO soldiers from the Bosnian Croat Army battles to defend its homeland in the bloody Yugoslavian Civil War. Fifty years apart, these two armies are fighting to defend exactly the same land. Although fighting for two different causes they are walking the same well trodden path and share the same motivations and ideologies. As they move toward a haunting and symbolically important cemetery, can either escape the inevitable bloody end and break a cycle stretching back hundreds of years? The winner of 15 international film awards, this powerful war film has a unique style, seamlessly blending two parallel narratives toward one ultimately explosive finale.

First time feature filmmaker Kristijan Milic teams with writer Josip Mlakic for this screen adaptation of Mlakic's popular novel following two tales of 20th Century bloodshed in Bosnia. Alternating between warfare in 1943 and 1993, Milic and Mlakic's dark war drama highlights the haunting sameness of both battles by following a squadron of HVO (Bosnian Croat) soldiers as the walk the same path and face the same treachery that their Domobran (defenders of the Corat Independent State) forefathers did just fifty years prior. Chief among the HVO team is sympathetic soldier Tomo - whose grandfather was the last surviving Domobran Martin. By the time soldiers in both eras make their way to the haunted cemetery, the stories converge to highlight the hopeless cycle of strife that seems poised to repeat itself ad infinitum.

Shows two parallel stories connecting the same place and war environment, but half a century apart. The first story takes place in 1993 during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina while the second one takes place in 1943 during World War II. After numerous disturbing events they finally collide at a secret timeless cemetery. Considered to be cursed, the cemetery is the place where powerful forces are released before dawn: the Fire force (alternately present in both stories) and the force of the Dead, the force of people who died in all wars.
