Synopsis:
Spy Swordsman (Onmitsu Kenshi) The first story arc, set in 1792, was western-inspired, with much of horesback riding, gunfights and the sympathically-portrayed native Ainu people "replacing" the Indians on the Frontier-like Ezo (modern Hokkaid?). Shintar? has been ordered to investigate the resources of Matsumae clan and write a report on it. The lord of Matsumae suspects it will lead to the shogunate taking control of his fiefdom and sends his fanatically loyal but just retainer, Kiba Jinj?r? (played by Toshiyuki Katsuki), who vows to kill him. During his investigation, Shintar? struggles to help downtrotten local Japanese villagers and oppressed Ainu, and fights local bandits and smugglers, often inadvertently aided by his rival Kiba. Fuyukichi Maki appears in several episodes as an Ainu rebel leader Kamokuin, while Bin Amatsu plays two minor roles.
