Synopsis:
The story is set in the first six months of the year 2000. It is not however a futuristic essay, but simply an echo of the 1976 film 'Jonas qui aura vingt-cinq ans en l'an 2000'. Indeed Jonas has just celebrated his 25th birthday. He has completed his studies at a film school and married Lila, a young African woman. 'Jonas et Lila, à demain' does not tell a story in the traditional sense with a beginning, a middle and an end. Instead the film is a composition of some sixty scenes, each helping to construct and flesh out a picture of the two main protagonists, through chance meetings and incidents which throw them into the midst of the world as it exists at the dawn of the new century, which is in fact little different from the world at the end of the old century. Jonas and Lila, in their relationship with one another and with the filmmaker Anziano who no longer frequents the film world, the Russian actress Irina, Jean, Cécile and the others - rendered vulnerable by the instability of modern life, all these people begin, with the passing days and events, to pull together the threads of what might be called 'a little tale of times to come', rather than a conventional story.

Swiss director Alain Tanner, who wowed audiences in the 1970s with his art house classic Jonah, Who Will Be 25 in the Year 2000 (1976), returns to the same territory with this decidedly more downbeat film. The movie details the life of Jonah (Jerome Robart), who has indeed just turned 25. A recent film school graduate, he is living with his Senegalese girlfriend and childhood sweetheart Lila (Aissa Maiga), and occasionally shooting documentaries. The film explores the shifting emotional landscape of Jonah and Lila's relationship as the two take in a boarder, Irina - a Russian woman on the lam from Soviet mobsters, for whom she made an adult movie. Meanwhile, Lila longs to return to Senegal to be with her grandmother. Jonas et Lila, a Demain ran at the 1999 San Sebastian Film Festival.

It's December 1999, and 25-year-old Jonah has just graduated from film school. As the new millennium begins, Jonah marries his longtime sweetheart Lila. Over the course of six months, the couple meet a number of interesting people, including Irina, an exiled Russian actress, as well as spending their time with Jonah's sister Cecile and his filmmaking mentor Anziano. The discussions Jonah has with these friends and strangers help him to gain some perspective on his life and the new millenium.
