Synopsis:
In 1191, King Richard the Lionhearted, along with several other European monarchs, is in the Holy Land intent on retaking Jerusalem from the Saracens. There is much infighting and outright treachery in the European encampment encampment however. Two nobles in particular, Sir Giles Amaury and Conrad of Montferrat, want to eliminate the English king and attempt to have him assassinated. Severely wounded and on his death bed, Richard is brought back to health by a Saracen doctor recruited by one of his loyal knights, Sir Kenneth of the Leopard. The king recovers from his wounds but when he hears that Sir Lawrence wishes to marry Lady Edith Plantagenet, the knight is banished only to be taken in by the very doctor who treated the king and who has an altogether different identity.

BELIEVERS, infidels and poor Sir Walter Scott are all ridden over roughshod in 'King Richard and the Crusaders,' which clattered across the Paramount's screen on Saturday, in CinemaScope and interminably. Based on a Scott classic 'The Talisman,' with a cast headed by Rex Harrison, George Sanders, Virginia Mayo and a newcomer, Laurence Harvey, Warner Brothers' belated try at CinemaScope medievalism succeeds only in being as long as it is wide. And twice as dull. For, in tapping a highly prepossessing source, this Henry Blanke production merely arranges a decorous WarnerColor canvas and lets Sir Walter and a workable cast take the hindmost. The tip-off occurs at the fade-in, underscored by a deafening (and recurrent) trumpet fanfare: One quick glimpse of a churning Crusader-Saracen fracas and the camera settles down before the tented headquarters of Richard, where, surprisingly, it remains for most of the picture.

While leading the Third Crusade, King Richard Lionheart battles treachery in his own camp as well as the Saracens and their charismatic leader Saladin.
